Maria Lysa, 1931.
In October 1931, nineteen-year-old Maria Lysa began her studies at the Faculty of Law of Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Her university records provide a detailed account of her legal education during the five years that followed.
Maria Lysa was born on July 16, 1912, in Starzyska in Eastern Galicia. A graduate of the Ukrainian gymnasium in Jaworów, she entered Jagiellonian University at a time when relatively few women pursued university legal education. She completed her law studies in 1936, receiving the degree of Master of Law, and also studied at the university’s School of Political Science.
The surviving university records make it possible to reconstruct Maria’s education in unusual detail. They document her enrollment, courses and professors, annual examinations, and completion of the law degree, providing a record not only of one student’s education but also of the experience of a Ukrainian woman studying law in interwar Poland.
